Short answer: they may. In one trial, walking in minimalist shoes increased foot muscle size and strength about as much as a foot exercise programme (Ridge 2019), and a later systematic review looked at the wider evidence on minimalist shoes and these muscles (2023 review). The evidence is still developing, results vary, and switching too fast carries its own risks.

Do barefoot shoes strengthen feet? What the research says
Footwear marketing can be enthusiastic, so it is worth looking at what studies actually measured.
A 2019 trial compared people who walked in minimalist shoes with people who did a daily foot-strengthening routine. Walking in minimalist shoes increased the size and strength of foot muscles, with results similar to the exercise group (Ridge 2019).
A systematic review then pulled together the studies on minimalist shoes and the small muscles on the sole of the foot (2023 review). The studies were small and used different shoes and time frames, so it is fair to say minimalist shoes may strengthen foot muscles, not that they will for everyone. Your gait, activity level and starting point all affect how you adapt.

What defines a barefoot shoe?
Rather than promising what a shoe will do for your body, it is more useful to say what it is. A barefoot shoe has a few measurable features, and they run through our handmade leather barefoot shoes:
- Zero drop: heel and forefoot at the same height, unlike most shoes with a raised heel. See our zero drop shoes.
- A wide toe box: the front of the shoe follows the shape of your foot, so your toes are not squeezed. See our wide toe box shoes.
- A thin, flexible sole that bends with your foot and lets you feel the ground.
- No built-in arch support or thick cushioning, so your feet do more of the work.
At Bespoky, every pair is handmade to order in our own workshops in Gaziantep and Istanbul, drawing on a four-generation shoemaking family. Each pair is made by one artisan in about 10–14 hours, from genuine, vegetable-tanned (chrome-free) leather, with a biodegradable construction.

Barefoot vs conventional shoes at a glance
| Feature | Typical conventional shoe | Barefoot-style shoe |
|---|---|---|
| Heel-to-toe drop | Heel raised above the forefoot | 0 mm: heel and forefoot level |
| Toe box | Tapers toward the front | Wide, foot-shaped |
| Sole flexibility | Often stiff through the midfoot | Bends easily with the foot |
| Sole thickness | Thick and cushioned | Thin, more ground feel |
| Arch support | Often built in | None |
Why a gradual transition matters
Moving from a cushioned, supportive shoe to a flat, thin one asks your feet, calves and tendons to work differently, so give them time. Runners who switched to minimalist shoes over ten weeks showed more signs of bone stress in the foot than those who stayed in their usual shoes (Ridge 2013). Start with short periods, increase wear time gradually and keep your old shoes in rotation. Our transition guide has a week-by-week plan, and our fit guide shows how to measure.
When to see a professional
This article is general information, not medical advice. A shoe is not a substitute for a diagnosis. See a podiatrist or physiotherapist if you have sharp or lasting foot pain, numbness or tingling, a recent injury, a condition such as diabetes that affects your feet, or a sudden change in the shape or function of your feet. They can tell you whether a change of footwear makes sense for you.
FAQ
Do barefoot shoes really strengthen feet?
They may. In one trial, walking in minimalist shoes increased foot muscle size and strength about as much as foot exercises (Ridge 2019). Results vary from person to person.
What are the main features of barefoot shoes?
A zero drop sole, a wide toe box, a thin flexible sole and no built-in arch support.
Why should I transition slowly?
Your feet and lower legs need time to adapt to the extra work. Switching quickly was linked to more bone stress signs in runners (Ridge 2013).
What are Bespoky shoes made of?
Genuine leather: smooth calf, suede or nubuck, vegetable-tanned (chrome-free), handmade to order in our own workshops.
