Short answer: barefoot shoes will not reverse a bunion, but many people find them more comfortable because a wide, foot-shaped toe box does not press the big toe inward or rub the bump. Research links narrow-toed shoes with bunions (systematic review) and shows that toe-box shape changes pressure over the joint (toe-box study). Choose a genuinely wide toe box, switch gradually, and see a podiatrist if the bunion is painful.

Do barefoot shoes help with bunions?
A bunion (hallux valgus) is a change in the alignment of the big-toe joint. Once that bony change has happened, a new pair of shoes will not undo it, and we will not claim otherwise.
What footwear can change is how much the bunion is squeezed and rubbed during the day:
- A systematic review and meta-analysis found that wearing narrow-toed shoes was associated with higher odds of having hallux valgus (systematic review, PubMed 42265673). That is an association, not proof that shoes cause bunions, or that wide shoes prevent or correct them.
- A study of women with hallux valgus found that the shape of the toe box affected pressure on the inner forefoot, where the bunion sits (toe-box study, PubMed 40220280).
So a roomy, foot-shaped toe box is a sensible choice for comfort. Whether it slows a bunion down has not been shown, so treat any claim like that with caution.

Do barefoot shoes help wide feet?
Wide feet are a normal variation, not a flaw. Many conventional shoes are widest at the ball of the foot and then taper towards the toes, so people with wide forefeet often size up, which makes the shoe too long and loose at the heel.
A foot-shaped shoe is widest at the toes, because that is where most bare feet are widest. A quick check: stand on a sheet of paper, trace your foot, then place your current shoe on the tracing. If your big toe or little toe spills outside the shoe outline, the shoe is compressing your toes.

What to look for if you have bunions or wide feet
- An anatomical wide toe box that is widest at the toe tips, not a regular shoe that is simply "wide fit".
- A soft upper with no seam over the bunion. Soft genuine leather that moves with the foot, with smooth stitching away from the bump.
- A zero drop, flexible sole, so the forefoot is not pushed forward into the toe box by a raised heel.
- A secure heel, so you do not have to grip with your toes to keep the shoe on.
- The right length and width. Our fit guide shows how to measure both.
Bespoky has made shoes since 2018 in our own workshops in Gaziantep and Istanbul, drawing on a four-generation craft family. Every pair is handmade to order in genuine leather on a wide toe box, zero drop last, in women's barefoot shoes and men's barefoot shoes.
How to switch to barefoot shoes with bunions
Take it slowly, especially after years in cushioned or supportive shoes. Start with an hour or two a day, add time over several weeks, and keep your old shoes for long days while you adapt. Runners who moved to minimalist shoes over ten weeks showed more signs of bone stress in the foot than those who did not, a good reminder that feet need time (Ridge et al., 2013). Our week-by-week transition guide has a full plan.
When to see a professional
This article is general information, not medical advice. See a podiatrist or doctor if your bunion is painful even in roomy shoes or barefoot, is getting bigger quickly, is red, hot or swollen, if you have numbness or tingling in your toes, or if you have diabetes or circulation problems. They can explain all your options, from footwear and exercises to orthoses or surgery.
FAQ
Can barefoot shoes reverse bunions?
No. Footwear does not reverse the bony change of a bunion. A wide toe box can make shoes more comfortable by reducing squeezing and rubbing.
Are zero drop shoes good for bunions?
Zero drop alone does not help a bunion; toe box shape matters more. A level sole does keep the forefoot from being pushed forward into the front of the shoe.
What is the difference between a wide shoe and a wide toe box?
A "wide" shoe is usually a conventional shoe made wider overall, often still tapering at the toes. A wide toe box gives extra room exactly where the toes spread.
Can I wear barefoot shoes with hammer toes?
Many people with hammer toes find a roomy toe box more comfortable because it rubs less on the toe knuckles. Check with a podiatrist if your toes are painful or rigid.
